Yueya Zhuo (月牙桌), or the “Crescent Moon Table,” is one of the classic pieces of Chinese furniture. Originating in the Ming and Qing dynasties, the design of these tables was developed so they could function as standalone consoles or as a joined pair. Although they often appear individually, they were traditionally crafted in matching pairs, which in Chinese culture symbolized family unity and completeness. When separated, these tables serve as elegant consoles for entryways or hallways. Their lack of sharp corners makes them ideal for high-traffic areas, ensuring unobstructed passage in narrow spaces. When joined together, both halves form a perfectly round center table, which in Chinese culture is a symbol of ‘wholeness’ and unity. These tables feature specialized engineering that ensures a seamless fit:– Peg & Mortise System: The flat back edges are equipped with a traditional “hidden” joinery system—wooden pegs on one table and matching holes on the other. This locks the two units together so precisely that the seam is nearly invisible. -D-Shaped Legs: To maintain a clean aesthetic, the back legs are often crafted in a half-width “D” shape. Standing alone, they look like complete furniture; when joined, the two halves meet to form one solid, circular central leg. The prestige of these tables comes from the authentic lacquer process, which is both decorative and protective. True lacquer is harvested from the sap of the Toxicodendron vernicifluum tree and applied in dozens of micro-layers. Each layer is dried and hand-polished, resulting in a finish that is highly resistant to heat and moisture. The deep black finish represents the element of water, symbolizing stability, power, and professional depth. Adopted by the Chinese elite (Literati) for their adaptability, these tables fit various interior needs: Entryway/Hallway, used against a wall for displaying art, ceramics, or lighting. Social Hub, moved to the center of a room and joined to create a table for tea, refreshments, or games.
